Description
Exercise Name: Z-scores 3
Math Missions: High school statistics and probability Math Mission
Types of Problems: 1

The Z-scores 3 exercise appears under the High school statistics and probability Math Mission. This exercise calculates probabilities from a standard normal table.

Types of Problems[]

There is one type of problem in this exercise:

  1. Find the probability using the table: This problem describes a normal distribution with a mean and a standard deviation. It asks the user to calculate the probability that a score would fall between the two given values.

Find the probability using the table

Strategies[]

This exercise is medium to get accuracy badges because user first needs to learn how to use the standard normal table. Once this is done, the speed badges are medium because they need to look at the table twice and do some strategic complementation on many problems.

  1. User will have to calculate the z-score to look it up in the table. The formula to find the z-score is to take the value, and calculate .
  2. User will find the probability of the higher score happening and subtract from that the probability of the lower score happening.
  3. If user has a positive z-score the probability is the number in the table.
  4. If user has a negative z-score the probability is the number in the table subtracted from one.

Real-life Applications[]

  1. Data and statistics appear in news reports and in the media every day.
  2. Many of the problems in this exercise could be viewed as real-life applications.
  3. Statistics can be seen more frequently than calculus in every day life.
  4. A boxplot is useful for dividing data into manageable quarters.
