The Writing basic algebraic expressions word problems exercise appears under the 6th grade (U.S.) Math Mission and 7th grade (U.S.) Math Mission. This exercise practices writing expressions with variables.

Types of Problems[]

There are two types of problems in this exercise:

  1. Use the chart to make an expression: This problem describes a story problem and provides a chart that organizes that information. The user is asked to write an expression to represent the situation described in the chart.
    Wewvwp1

Use the chart to make an expression

  2. Read situation and write an expression: This problem has a situation written, possibly with a minor visual aid. The user is asked to create an expression that models the situation.
    Wewvwp2

Read situation and write an expression

Strategies[]

This exercise is medium to get accuracy badges depending on reading ability. The speed badges are medium because problems repeat at a decent clip, but reading speed will ultimately influence some performance speed.

  1. The problems have total needed, money left, and area/volume/folding problems, which correspond to general adding, subtracting, and exponentiation.

Real-life Applications[]

  1. Algebraic expressions are used for almost everything we do. (example: ___ bakes 5 cookies every day. How many total cookies would they bake in seven days?)
  2. Knowledge of algebra is essential for higher math levels like trigonometry and calculus. Algebra also has countless applications in the real world.
