The Understanding multiplying fractions by fractions exercise appears under the 5th grade (U.S.) Math Mission. This exercise uses visual models to better understand multiplication of fractions.
Types of Problems[]
There are three types of problems in this exercise:
- Write an expression: This problem provides a rectangular area model that represents the product of two fractions. The user is asked to write (not evaluate) the product.

- Move dot: This problem displays a number line and a product with a movable orange dot. The user is asked to move the dot to the spot represented by the product.

- Calculate area: This problem has a rectangle cut into pieces some of which are shaded. Users are asked to use the model to find the product of the fractions.

Strategies[]
This exercise is easy to get accuracy badges with knowledge of multiplication of fractions. The speed badges are also easy because the numbers are not large and the models are clear.
- The answer for Move dot will not be on one of the tick marks most the time, but users can "count" the spaces between the tick marks provided with the manipulative.
- Use * for multiplication.
- Fractions need to be simplified so make sure to do so before submitting answers.
- Users can use their geometric knowledge of "halfway" to quickly get some correct answers on Move dot.
- The answer box currently is sometimes in the text of the problem and sometimes to the right, don't be confused.
