Exercise Name: Statistical questions
Math Missions: 6th grade (U.S.) Math Mission, 7th grade (U.S.) Math Mission, High school statistics and probability Math Mission
Types of Problems: 1

The Statistical questions exercise appears under the 6th grade (U.S.) Math Mission, 7th grade (U.S.) Math Mission and High school statistics and probability Math Mission. This exercise assists users to understand the difference between statistical questions dealing with unknowns and non-statistical questions that are known.

Types of Problems[]

There is one type of problem in this exercise:

  1. Determine which of the following are statistical questions: This problem provides a question, which may be statistical in nature and some which may not be. The user is asked to select which are statistical and which are not.

Determine which of the following are statistical questions

Strategies[]

Critical reading and analysis are keys to being able to perform this problem well. Even with careful reading and knowledge, it is possible to get a problem wrong occasionally because of a minor reading or understanding error.

  1. The problems repeat at a decent rate so it is possible to spend the time to remember the correct responses.
  2. In general a question is not statistical if it can actually be determined. On the other hand, a question is statistical if it deals with an unknown, or more likely unknowable, quantity.
  3. This problem is a good example of the differences between statistics and other mathematical fields such as Algebra.

Real-life Applications[]

  1. Data and statistics appear in news reports and in the media every day.
  2. Statistics can be seen more frequently than calculus in every day life.
