The Place value blocks exercise appears under the 4th grade (U.S.) Math Mission. This exercise practices using place value blocks to find values of numbers.
Types of problems[]
There are two types of problems in this exercise:
Find the correct place value model
Determine what number is shown by the place value blocks.
- Which place value model shows ___ ?: This has a number and user is asked to find which place value model with blocks is equivalent to it.
- What number is shown by the place value blocks?: This has a place value model with blocks and user is asked to find which number it shows
Strategies[]
Basic knowledge of place value is required for this exercise.
- The cube block has a value of 1,000, the square block has a value of 100, the skinny tall block has a value of 10, and the shorter blocks have a value of less than 10.
Real-life Applications[]
- Place value is used for writing checks.
- A common example of place value is money (example: $1.69 means that there is 1 whole (dollar), 6 tenths (dimes), and 9 hundredths (pennies)).
