The Multiplying Fractions and Whole Numbers: Equivalent Expressions exercise appears under the 4th grade (U.S.) Math Mission. This exercise practices recognizing the result of products of whole numbers and fractions.
Types of Problems[]
There is one type of problem in this exercise:
- Fill in the blank to complete the equation: This problem provides an arithmetical equation involving arithmetic with fractions and whole numbers. The user is asked to fill in the blank with either the appropriate whole number or fraction to make the equation true.
Fill in the blank to complete the equation
Strategies[]
Knowledge of fraction names and fraction multiplication are encouraged to ensure success on this exercise.
- One can "read" the fraction in order to determine the correct value to fill in the blank, remembering that saying things like "sixths" is equivalent to the mathematical
- If the side with the blank has a fraction, the answer will be the correct number to complete the numerator of the operations on the other side.
- If the side with the blank has no fraction, the answer will be "one over" an appropriate denominator.
- Simplification of fractions is not required on this exercise.
Real-life Applications[]
- Fractions appear in many fields, from personal finance to advanced mathematics. Familiarity with the names and operations with fractions will increase mathematical ability at almost all levels.
- The problems in this exercise strengthen the understanding of fraction vocabulary.
- Multiplication is needed and used by mechanics for repairing cars by multiplying when they overhaul the engine, measure the pistons or just to put in a new gearbox or engine.
