The Meaning of division exercise appears under the 3rd grade (U.S.) Math Mission, 4th grade (U.S.) Math Mission. This exercise explores the concept of division by viewing it primarily as breaking into smaller groups.

Types of Problems[]

There are two types of problems in this exercise:

  1. Use the picture to find the expression: This problem has a picture, usually involving a rectangle measurement model or a collection of objects, and asks the student to select the expression that models the picture.
    Md1

Use the picture to find the expression

  2. Which picture is the expression: This problem has several pictures, one of which illustrates a given division problem. Sometime the student is also expected to give the correct answer to the division problem, but not always.
    Md2

    Which picture is the expression

Strategies[]

This exercise is easy to get accuracy badges because the numbers are small. It is medium difficulty to attain speed badges because of load times on some of the pictures.

  1. On problem type one when the rectangle model is being used, users can just take the number shown and divide by the number of rectangles they count, which can be slightly faster to do.
  2. On the second type of problem, most of the time (but not all) only one of pictures is equally split making it easy to tell which is the correct illustration.

Real-life Applications[]

  1. Fractions, decimals, and percents are used in many sports such as basketball to determine how many field goals the player has made over how many they missed.
