The first instance of Interpreting dot plots with fraction addition and subtraction is under the 4th grade (U.S.) Math Mission. This exercise practices reading a line plot and use of fractions in word problems.
Types of Problems[]
There is one type of problem in this exercise:
- Use the line plot: This problem has a line plot and asks the user to answer a question about the line plot. As the exercise name implies the numbers will involve fractions and can be either addition or subtraction.
Use the line plot
Strategies[]
This exercise is easy to get accuracy badges because a calculator can be used and decimals are acceptable. It is medium to attain speed badges because working with the fractions, simplifying, and regrouping with the fractions is not a fast process all the time.
- When subtracting the two most common types ask for the difference between largest and smallest, and first and second largest/smallest. Since it changes, users will have to read carefully each time.
Real-life Applications[]
- Data and statistics appear in news reports and in the media every day.
- Many of the problems in this exercise could be viewed as real-life applications.
- Statistics can be seen more frequently than calculus in every day life.
- This particular problem is common on standardized tests, such as the SAT or GRE.
