Math Missions: 4th grade (U.S.) Math Mission, Pre-algebra Math Mission
Types of Problems: 4

The Identifying factors and multiples exercise appears under the 4th grade (U.S.) Math Mission and Pre-algebra Math Mission. This exercise practices vocabulary words factor and multiple.

Types of Problems[]

There are four types of problems in this exercise:

  1. Identify a factor: This problem provides a number and a list of possible factors of the number. The student is asked to select the number that is a factor of the given number.
    Ifam1

    Identify a factor

  2. Identify a multiple: This problem provides a number and a list of possible multiples of the number. The student is asked select the number that is a multiple of the given number.
    Ifam4

    Identify a multiple

  3. Reason for being a factor or multiple: This problem says that a particular number is a factor or multiple of another number. The student is asked to identify which statement is verifies this relationship.
    Ifam2

Reason for being a factor or multiple

  4. Find all true statements: This problem provides an arithmetic equation and several statements afterwards. The student is asked to select all the statements from the list that are true based on the relationship.
    Ifam3

    Find all true statements

Strategies[]

Vocabulary knowledge is the key to doing this problem correctly, specifically the difference and relationship between multiples and factors.

  1. A factor of a number divides into that number with no remainder (evenly). Thus a factor of a number will always be smaller than or equal to the number.
  2. A multiple of a number is a positive integer multiplied against a number, so a multiple will always be larger than or equal to a given number.
  3. On Find all true statements it is not necessary to read the initial statement. The correct answers can be selected by reading the potential statements and selecting all that are true.

Real-life Applications[]

  1. Multiplication is needed and used by mechanics for repairing cars by multiplying when they overhaul the engine, measure the pistons or just to put in a new gearbox or engine.
