The first instance of Equivalent fractions on the number line is under the 3rd grade (U.S.) Math Mission. This exercise explores the concept of different representations of fractions which is especially important as different representation of numbers with equal value is foundation to much of arithmetic.

Types of Problems[]

There are two types of problems in this exercise:

  1. Move the dot a number of marks: This problem has the student move a point to the correct spot on a number line but given with an unreduced fraction.

  2. Unreduce the fraction: This problem uses markings on a number line and asks the student to identify which unreduced fraction is the same value as a given reduced fraction.

Strategies[]

Knowledge about reducing fractions and finding equivalent fractions (the Identity Property of Multiplication) should be sufficient to ensure success on this exercise.

  1. For the second type of problem, students can just reduce the fractions in the answer choices and find the one that is equivalent to the given fraction. There is no real need to wait for the picture although it helps to visualize where the fractions are located.

Real-life Applications[]

  1. Fractions appear in every-day media to display information to consumers.
  2. Fractions are used in real life in lots of different ways, but are commonly used in cooking, construction and science.
