The Dividing fractions exercise appears under the 6th grade (U.S.) Math Mission, Arithmetic essentials Math Mission, Pre-algebra Math Mission and Mathematics I Math Mission. This exercise practices the idea of dividing by a fraction being equivalent to multiplying by a reciprocal.

  1. Find the quotient: This problem has a division problem involving two fractions. The student is expected to perform the division and provide the quotient in the available space.

Strategies[]

This exercise is easy to get accuracy badges as long as one is familiar with the concept of fraction division. The speed badges are also easy because the numerators and denominators are all single digits.

  1. Division by a fraction is multiplication by the reciprocal so the quotient divided by is .
  2. Interestingly, the only problem on this exercise does not require fractions to be simplified to lowest terms which can drastically shorten the time required to solve the problem.

Real-life Applications[]

  1. Fractions are used in real life in many different ways, but they are most commonly used in the cooking, construction and science industries.
  2. Choreographers need to be able to divide the piece they want to perform, into smaller pieces so that everyone will be able to do and give their best, whether they dance or choreograph an orchestra. In the end of the day they need to flow together in harmony and they will use division to accomplish that.
  3. Division is used in group projects so the work is divided and each group member has their own role.
  4. Majority of law issues are arising now are about land division and who lived there first. This requires not just honesty, but also division.
