The Converting mixed numbers and improper fractions exercise appears under the 4th grade (U.S.) Math Mission, 5th grade (U.S.) Math Mission, Arithmetic essentials Math Mission, Pre-algebra Math Mission and Mathematics I Math Mission. This exercise practices understanding of the relationship between improper fractions and mixed numbers.
Types of Problems[]
There are two types of problems in this exercise:
- Mixed to improper: This problem provides a mixed number which the user is asked to change into an improper fraction.
Mixed to improper
- Improper to mixed: This problem provides an improper fraction which the users is asked to convert into a mixed number.
Improper to mixed
Strategies[]
This exercise is easy to get accuracy badges if user knows the standard conversion techniques. The numbers are reasonable. Speed badges are easy also because the problem types are highly predictable and easy to do if user knows the standard techniques.
- For Mixed to improper multiply the integer by the denominator, add the numerator, place over the denominator.
- For Improper to mixed figure out how many times the denominator goes into the numerator (this is the integer) and the remainder is the new numerator of the fraction part.
- Only need to get five out of six correct to move to the next level.
Real-life Applications[]
- Fractions appear in every day media to display information to consumers.
- Fractions are used in real life in lots of different ways, but are commonly used in cooking, construction and science.
