Description
Exercise Name: Area and perimeter of rectangles word problems
Math Missions: 4th grade (U.S.) Math Mission, 5th grade (U.S.) Math Mission
Types of Problems: 2

The Area and perimeter of rectangles word problems exercise appears under the 4th grade (U.S.) Math Mission and 5th grade (U.S.) Math Mission. This exercise practices word problems with area and volume.

Types of Problems[]

There are two types of problems in this exercise:

  1. Solve for dimension: This problem describes a word problem involving a rectangle. The user solves the problem and finds the dimension requested. The problem pictured here is area, but it can also be perimeter.
    APWP1

    Solve for dimension

  2. Compare sizes: This problem describes two rectangles. The user solves the area of each and correctly selects who has the larger rectangle and how much it is bigger by.
    APWP2

    Compare sizes

Strategies[]

This exercise is easy to get accuracy badges because most of the algebra involved is one-step equations. Research indicates medium to get speed badges so far, even though the problems went quickly users were not able to get many speed badges. The tolerance might be a little tight at this time.

  1. On Compare sizes the first question is always the person with the larger yard and the second slot is for how much larger.
  2. On Compare sizes there first name in the drop-down menu is always the second name from the world problem. Be careful.

Real-life Applications[]

  1. Area and perimeter are used in many jobs for architecture and interior design.
  2. Perimeter is used for building a swimming pool. The owner of the pool wants to maximize the area within constraints of property and minimize the amount of digging and concrete, etc. that goes into the project. Yet the perimeter also defines length that is used for swimming races.
  3. Architects use lots of geometry when building bridges, roofs on houses, and other structures.
  4. The ancient Egyptians from over 4000 years ago were very good at shapes and geometry. Every time the Nile burst its banks and flooded the planes, they had to use geometry to measure their gardens and fields all over again.
