Strategies[]

This exercise is easy to get accuracy badges and speed badges because the problem types repeat at a fairly fast rate, the same type of total and same type of difference. Also, the numbers were often easy to work with making it possible to do these without a calculator and thereby increase speed.

  1. When adding and subtracting decimals on paper, be sure to line up the decimal points.
  2. The numbers on the problems are not particular large and borrowing and carrying does not happen on every problem, read it first to see if you can answer without writing it out to increase speed.
  3. Phrases like "how much faster" and "total" can be used as predictors of the operation needed to perform the problem.

Real-life Applications[]

  1. Decimals appear in every-day media to display information to consumers.
  2. Decimals are very common in shopping. Price tags, food labels, and receipts all contain decimals.
  3. At gas pumps, decimals are used to show how much gas is pumped and much it costs per gallon.
